In PROFINET, the 'Watchdog Time' of an IO Device is computed as Update Time multiplied by the Reduction Ratio (typically 3 or more); if no cyclic telegram is received within that window, the device drops its outputs to the safe state.

A DALI DT1 Function Test simulates a 30-second mains outage to verify that the emergency luminaire switches over to battery; the result (OK / Battery Fault / Lamp Fault) is reported back to the controller for an EN 50172-compliant audit trail.

EnOcean is particularly well suited to the retrofit of existing buildings: sensors and buttons can be added without pulling cable or fitting batteries, with a 20+ year service life, making it ideal for heritage buildings or sites that are difficult to rewire.

The EnOcean protocol is standardised as ISO/IEC 14543-3-10 (since 2012), which guarantees multi-vendor interoperability, and is maintained by the EnOcean Alliance (headquartered in Germany) with more than 400 members worldwide.

LoRaWAN 1.1 standardises roaming: Handover Roaming (HRoaming, in which the device migrates from one Network Server to another) and Passive Roaming (in which a packet is relayed via the visited network without session transfer), enabling cross-operator mobility similar to that of cellular networks.
